Fashion and beauty lovers around the globe look forward to the first Monday of May every single year so they can watch their favorite stars walk the red carpet at the Met Gala. This year’s theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion, lent itself to some pretty outrageous outfits, but the Met Gala 2019 beauty trends were seriously impressive, too. From beautifully draped blush, to hair teased up to the sky, the celebs who walked the red — or pink — carpet at this year’s Met Gala did not disappoint when it came to their beauty looks.
Though I know that cameras at the red carpet usually focus on the dresses and full head-to-toe looks, I tend to focus on everything from the neck up. I love seeing how makeup artists transform the celebrities’ faces to perfectly complement their outfits, especially with ones that are as complex as the ones for the Met Gala. Hair and makeup can complete a total look in a way that no other accessories can.
While the ball is known for bringing avant garde beauty to the red carpet, a lot of the Met Gala 2019 beauty trends are actually wearable in real life. Here are just a few of my faves that I saw on tonight’s red carpet, and how you can bring some of them into your day-to-day beauty routine.
1. Wash Of Blush & Highlight
Reminiscent of Met Gala queen Rihanna’s “draping” blush technique from the 2017 ball, many celebs like Lili Reinhart (pictured above) chose to bring the trend back. Adwoa Aboah and Lily Singh also tried out the trend with their pinky blushes, while Celine Dion took her golden highlighter to the next level with the technique.
To get the look, sweep your blush or highlighter from the apples of your cheeks back in a C-shape, similarly to how you apply bronzer. You can concentrate the color above your brow or closer to your hairline, depending on what look you’re going for. For a perfectly blended flushed cheek, try out the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Peaceful ($29).
2. Perky Ponies
Though red carpets are often known for elegant up-dos and cascading curls, a huge Met Gala 2019 beauty trend was the ponytail. Hailey Bieber (above), Nicki Minaj, and Gwen Stefani opted for the high voluminous ponytail. Meanwhile, Ashley Graham opted for a low — but excessively adorned — style. This red carpet proved once and for all that ponytails can be just as fancy as other traditional hairstyles.
3. Legally (Platinum) Blonde
Blonde isn’t an abnormal hair color, but when you’re Mindy Kaling, Kris Jenner, or Zendaya, it might be for you. Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars donned wigs in a platinum blonde shade to complete their looks. Even if the hair color isn’t permanent for any of them, it’s safe to say that they pulled it off for this huge carpet.
4. Technicolor Locks
Speaking of new hair colors, a few celebs decided to go a little bolder with their locks. Charlie XCX dip-dyed her brunette bob with a hot pink, and Kristen Stewart’s ombré’d shaggy cut screamed grunge. Regina Hall and Lucy Boynton (above) went balls-to-the-wall and decided to go for all-over color.
Though I’m not entirely sure if these new hair colors are permanent or not, I think that these stars should keep the color around for awhile. If you’re looking for ways to switch up your ‘do without any permanent changes to your head, try out a wig from Bellami. The extensions and wig company has been endorsed by Kylie Jenner herself, so you know that they’re quality.
5. (Gem)Stone-Cold Eyes
The bedazzled glam did not stop with the red carpet attire — it also migrated to some of the celebs’ faces. Stars like Awkwafina, Lupita N’Yongo, Tiffany Haddish, E! host Elaine Welteroth, and of course, Billy Porter (above), all rocked some bejeweled eye glam. Whether it was glitter packed on their eyelids or gems glued on, the glitz made some major beauty statements on the carpet.
For a similar — but more wearable — effect, Glossier Play’s Glitter Gelée ($14) is perfect when you need a little extra shine. The gel has a built-in adhesive so you don’t need anything extra, and the glitter is chunky enough to give you that bedazzled effect.
6. Elongated Eyeshadow
Winged shadow is a totally wearable trend, but the celebs who attended the Met Gala this year took it to a whole new level. Whether the shadow was neutral or a pop of color, people like Laverne Cox (above), Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and even Darren Criss chose to go for a more amplified eye look.
For beginners trying to get a similar look, apply your eyeshadow using the tape trick. Line up the tape with your bottom lash line so that the wing follows your natural eye shape. After blending out your eyeshadow and peeling back the tape, you’ll reveal a perfectly sharp wing.
7. Glam Twiggy Lashes
I couldn’t put together a beauty roundup from the Met Gala without mentioning the phenomenon that was Lady Gaga on the carpet. In her entrance, she unveiled not one, not two, not even three looks. She rocked four different outfits in the course of 15 minutes on the carpet, complete with a mini hair transformation. But one of the standout parts of her getup were her exaggerated sparkly Twiggy-inspired lashes. Gigi Hadid also rocked a similar look, but hers were icy white.
Though these exact ones might not be feasible for everyday wear, you can try a chunkier lash look by layering your mascara and allowing it to get a little clumpy. Concentrate the product at the root to really emphasize your lash line and give yourself a doe-eyed effect. Volumizing mascaras like the L’Oréal Voluminous Lash Paradise ($10) are great for achieving this look.
8. Hot Pink Pout
With Barbie pink making appearances all over the carpet, it’s no surprise that the signature hot pink shade also made its way onto some A-listers’ lips. Ladies like Lucy Boynton, Chloë Grace Moretz, Kacey Musgraves (above), and of course, Lady Gaga, all rocked some form of hot pink on their lips.
To get the perfectly pink pout, Lady Gaga’s makeup artist Sarah Tanno used the Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Flaming-oh! ($26). If you’re a fan of a more dried-down finish, you can also try out the Dose of Colors Matte Liquid Lipstick in Pinky Promise ($18).
9. Voluminous Hair
Heels weren’t the only things that were towering on the red carpet. Beauties like Dua Lipa and Lily Collins (above) had hairstyles that had been teased up to the rafters, while Ciara and Yara Shahidi rocked their voluminous natural texture. As they say, the bigger the hair, the closer to God. And these ladies sure did look heavenly on the carpet.
